Sustainability Blend is the latest Blend to be released by Toby’s Estate. In creating this blend, we have drawn on the best offerings of several major certifiers to produce a coffee which is crafted without compromise. Sustainability Blend contains Fairtrade, Organic, Rainforest Alliance, and Direct Trade origins, ensuring that every bean is grown, picked, and traded sustainably. This is important for several reasons:
Environmental: Coffee grown using traditional organic methods result in better land use, less pollution, safer environments for workers and tastier, better quality coffee.
Social strength: It is important for growers to have financial security and access to medical and educational resources. Workers on farms should be able to expect a fair rate of pay, decent accommodation and schooling for their children. Growers may achieve these goals through participation in certified cooperatives, or by forming their own cooperatives managed democratically by a committee of members. Either way, they require support and commitment from buyers to ensure a stable future. By personally choosing to buy our beans from operations like this, Toby’s Estate is providing that support.
Economical: When growers receive better prices for better coffee, they have an incentive to put extra effort into their farms. Knowing in advance they have a buyer for their quality crop allows them to plan ahead with confidence, allowing their children to attend school while workers are hired for the farm. Money is available to make improvements such as expanding facilities and buying new equipment, which benefits the grower, the roaster and the consumer. Choosing quality growers, and supporting them, benefits everyone, and shapes the kind of industry we’d all like to see.
These are the pillars of Sustainability Blend, but we did not stop there! We also wanted the blend to taste amazing whether consumed as straight espresso, latte, or plunger brew showing quality and consistency in every bean. With this in mind, we spent almost a year crafting the blend: tasting and refining.
